I have seen different comments here about certain features and things people don't understand why such a solution.
Here are some of my observations:
1) The rails. They are there because of city train, as a security feature, since it is public building. I guess that that could be some law to have rails there.
2) This type of brick (decorative brick, since building it self is built out of light concrete blocks) probably were chosen due to other public buildings nearby, like 4 school buildings in neighborhood are built from red brick, nearby Catholic and Baptist buildings are built from red brick. So this solution and city building committee decision seems to be reasonable.
3) The height. As far as I know the initial plan was to build bigger and taller building, but due to restrictions in that area of city they were changed and new design was created.
4) In real life it looks more welcoming than in pictures.
5) Chairs in the chapel are movable. This building don't have dedicated events hall, so chapel has multiple uses.

There is being built a new chapel in Riga. If you are interested in where and what it looks like now, let me know. I will e-mail you picture.
Jānis Blūmshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10033816229978694420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5695029109995059543.post-37918429065431981542015-12-05T16:09:56.843-08:002015-12-05T16:09:56.843-08:00I have the blessing to be the current Bishop in th...I have the blessing to be the current Bishop in this beautiful chapel. I love the baptimial font situated outside the sacrament hall. I love the light which enters from all the windows. Every aspect has meaning. The light of Christ, the examples of Christ and his teachings - the chapel tries to portray this to those who enter is doors.
Our doors are open to all. All are invited to attend to see this building, to join us in sacrament each Sunday from 9am. We are a small congregation and love meeting new people. My father was the architect for the LDS church in Australia at the time and I know he received a bit of heat for the Leura chapel. He went on to work for the church for over 30 years as architect and Physical Facilities manager, in Europe, the US and Asia. He was also working in the middle east when the Abu Dhabi chapel was being built and was able to consult on the design of the chapel, based on what they had done in Hong Kong when the multi level chapel was built there. I'm very proud of the fact that my Dad's work is scattered across the world and its lovely to see someone else appreciate the beautiful architecture that can be found in LDS chapels, especially when they break outside the standard mould!Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04116343805065996956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5695029109995059543.post-80123466125666762892015-04-24T04:57:27.974-07:002015-04-24T04:57:27.974-07:00I know that this was written more than six years a...I know that this was written more than six years ago, but do you have a diagrammatic sketch of the layered, vantage-point celestial room you described? I'm designing a modern temple for my master's thesis in architecture and I've given a lot of thought to this essay for quite some time.

Architecturally, I am left to wonder if the celestial room in the center (i.e. Cardston) acts as such a vantage point, since the plan view is essentially an infinite perspective from Heaven. I wonder if lowering the celestial room to the same level as the other rooms allows you to see the other rooms in progression.

Do you have anything thoughts? I'm extremely interested to have a visual representation of your idea.Bryce Pendletonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04222457876618852510noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5695029109995059543.post-57899734973133699132014-04-14T23:22:38.854-07:002014-04-14T23:22:38.854-07:00Thank you for sharing the information. Basically, what good does it do to turn off the lights on one special building for half an hour one day per year, when the real problem is all the other lights on that are wasting electricity?

The Lord's Supper isn't Sunday Dinner; it's a symbol of our participation in the "at-one-ment" that makes our complex civilization possible. The ritual only provides a point in time and space at which we say a thing has happened that in reality must occur on a more protracted basis, integrated into our daily lives. So shut off the lights on your way out the door, Ok?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14182133764965096096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5695029109995059543.post-37351862247236487832013-11-29T15:19:27.805-08:002013-11-29T15:19:27.805-08:00I really dig this post. I was just wondering if I could use this image for a class project I am doing at BYU-Idaho? It will not be used to make money or anything like that, simply for learning how to use photoshop. I would really appreciate it if I had your permission. Thank you! Small venomous towns are creepy. From what I read, the chapel is 15,000 sq.ft., the underground parking is a huge bonus, leaving room for beautiful landscaping. The area is wooded, and the chapel would block no one's view of anything. The chapel is set back from the road, it is a pleasant design - nothing shocking. There is a large school with above-ground parking that takes up its entire lot just down the street. Also down the street, is St. Lawrence Church, built right up against the main road, above-ground parking (large lot), yet still an imposing structure. Reading the arguments against and the actual laws and variances, the LDS church is within its rights to build the desired structure on that lot. People who think it is not within the law are beating a dead horse. I hope that if the church decides not to build there (but I think they will and it will turn out alright for everyone) that they sell the property to an organization that will build a drug and alcohol center there. Truly, I believe the neighbors are harboring some anti-mormon bigotry and trying to conceal it with lame and irrelevant arguments. I don't believe they would complain if it was a church being built of their own religion.
